Fire Razes Chemical Market In Onitsha, Many Feared Trapped


Multi-million naira worth of goods and buildings have been destroyed in the fire that gutted the Chemical Market in Onitsha Head Bridge, Anambra State, with many people said to be trapped in the fire.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 12:10pm on Tuesday when the chemicals stored in some shops started exploding one after another.

Many people were also said to be injured as the chemicals were exploding and hitting people at various points.

The men of the Anambra and Delta states fire service are on the ground battling to put off the fire.

In related news, the traders at Tejuosho market earlier in the year experienced the same unfortunately incident.

The artisans, who specialise in fabric works, were rendered jobless as over 1,600 industrial, weaving and straight sewing machines were destroyed in the mid-afternoon fire outbreak on Tuesday.

Lagos State Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, in his post-disaster loss and needs assessment at the scene of the incident, confirmed this on Wednesday.

The fire, which emanated from an industrial generating set, was said to have affected 150 lock-up shops.
