How To Write A Bestselling Business Book: Six Tips

Yasmin Walter of KMD Books is a multi-award-winning entrepreneur, international bestselling author and modern publisher based in Australia.

Hitting that No. 1 bestselling spot is an aspiration held by many authors. Not only does it give you bragging rights, but the accomplishment also sets you up as an established thought leader in your genre. They say a book is the best business card you can have, and I’ve found this couldn’t be truer.

Here are some of the methods I have used to create two Amazon bestsellers that business leaders can also use to achieve recognition in their own industry.

1. Create the opportunity. I found a gap in both markets for my books, and I was genuinely passionate about the topics I chose. Think about the essence of your book. Is it authentic to you? Can you talk about it in your sleep? Is it a subject people will want to read about?

2. Nail the cover. A free online template is likely not going to cut it. You can consider hiring a professional. You need the book to stand out online and on the shelves. Make readers want to pick it up. Make it pop. Make it trendy. Make it visually appealing.

3. Use a really good title. Keep the title short, simple and to the point. That will make it easier to remember. It also sets the vibe for the book without having to read the blurb. Remember, people are busy and like to have access to instant entertainment. You can lose a potential reader’s attention quickly, so make those seconds count.

4. Hook readers with your blurb. So your cover and title worked; now potential readers have your book in their hands to read the blurb. You have a few sentences to convince them, so make the most of it. Think about what would make you read the book. Don’t forget the basics of the five W’s: who, what, where, when and why.

5. Connect, promote and sell. It’s launch day. Share the news throughout your networks—I’m talking social media, emails, LinkedIn and even your neighbor next door. Market your book on all formats of media, especially platforms that your target audience is on. I’ve found podcasts are also an underutilized platform that have massive potential for reach. Tell everyone about your book. In the lead-up to launch day, I also suggest securing media coverage by reaching out to traditional publications. It all helps.

6. Choose the right category for your Amazon listing. There are hundreds to choose from, so select the category that best represents your book and has a high Amazon bestsellers rank. Each subcategory within the main category will have its own top 100 bestseller list. So select something that is relevant yet slightly ambiguous. It’s also a great idea to market a pre-sale date, as all those book sales will go toward your launch day figures. An influx of sales within a small period of time will give your ranking a boost toward that No. 1 spot.

Regardless of how your book ranks, remember to have fun with it. Yes, having the bragging rights to say, “I have a bestselling book,” is pretty epic. But having the bragging rights to say, “I thought of a book idea, executed the project and now people are actually buying my book,” is a massive achievement you should be proud of.
