Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Signs New Contract Until 2026

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has signed a two-year contract extension, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2026.

The German had previously said he would step down from his role when his existing deal expired at the end of the 2023/24 season but the new deal will take his Anfield tenure beyond a decade.

Assistant coaches Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz have also signed new deals, with news of Klopp’s extended stay a huge boost to the Reds, who are in the midst of an historic quadruple pursuit.

Explaining his decision to reverse plans to step away in two year’s time, Klopp told the club website: “Like any healthy relationship, it always has to be a two-way street; you have to be right for each other. The feeling we were absolutely right for each other is what brought me here in the first place and it’s why I’ve extended previously.

“This one is different because of the length of time we have been together. I had to ask myself the question: Is it right for Liverpool that I stay longer?

The former Borussia Dortmund boss arrived on Merseyside in October 2015, with Liverpool having sacked Brendan Rodgers only two months into the season.

Klopp’s first campaign brought two final defeats, against Manchester City in the League Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League, but a fourth-placed finish the following season saw the Reds return to the Champions League.

A run to the final of that competition in 2018 ended in defeat to Real Madrid but marked Liverpool’s return to the European elite and they lifted the trophy for a sixth time with victory over Tottenham in Madrid 12 months later. It was Klopp’s first Champions League success as a manager, having also lost the 2013 final to Bayern Munich while in charge of Dortmund.

Klopp’s men finished second to Man City in the Premier League despite racking up 97 points but were runaway champions in the Covid-disrupted campaign that followed, ending a 30-year wait for an English top-flight title.

League Cup success this season marked Klopp’s first domestic cup win in England and his side will return to Wembley for the FA Cup final against Chelsea at the end of the campaign.

They are also in pole position to reach a third Champions League final of the Klopp era after beating Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie last night, and trail Man City by a single point in another neck-and-neck title race.
